Stripside Coaching

$15.00

A guide to the communication of technique, tactics and psychology between coach and fencer during competition.

Stripside coaching is one of the critical and complex of all coaching skills in fencing. It refers to “game day” communications between coach and athlete in the competitive environment, and includes instruction provided during the bout. Lying at the interface of tactics and psychology, its goal is to convey critical information in a short period of time with the coach and athlete under extreme pressure. It is uniquely influenced by the urgency of the decision making process and the emotion of the moment. However, despite its potentially dramatic impact on bout performance and the formidable skill set required, stripside coaching has not been systematically studied or trained, and there is no prior written work. This training manual is a collaborative effort between psychologist, Dr. John Heil and coach, Paul Soter.
